Management is a technique used for optimum utilization or resources. In other words it is a process of getting things done with the aim of achieving goals effectively and efficiently. Effective and efficient are different term but they are interrelated. In term of management it is important to be both effective and efficient. Effectiveness in management is concerned with doing the right task at right time and efficiency means doing the task correctly in minimum cost and time.
Effectiveness and efficiency are two side of the same coin and need to be balanced. Management has been defined by different authors in a number of ways. The following are some of the main definitions of management:
According to Mary Parker Follet "Management is the art of getting things done through people."
According to Harold Koontz "Management is the art of getting things done through and with people in formally organized groups."
According to Henri Fayol "To manage is to forecast and to plan, to organize, to command, to co-ordinate and to control."
Characteristics / Nature / Features of Management:
Management is a goal-oriented process: - Every organization has some goals. These goals should be simple and clearly stated. Management unites the efforts of different individuals in the organization towards achieving these goals. For example the goal of a retail store may be to increase sales but Customer satisfaction may be the goal of a restaurant.
Management is a continuous process: - The process of management is a series of different function (planning, organizing, directing, staffing and controlling). These functions are simultaneously performed all the time. The task of a manager consists of an ongoing series of function.
Management is a group activity: - An organization is a collection of diverse individuals with different needs. Every member of the group has a different purpose for joining the organization but as a members of the organization they work towards the fulfilling the common organizational goal. This requires team work and coordination of individual effort in a common direction.
Management is a dynamic function: - Management is a dynamic function because it has to adapt itself to the changing environment. For example McDonald changes their menu and includes more non vegetarian dishes to survive in the Indian market.
Management is an intangible force: - Management is an intangible force that cannot be seen but its presence can be felt in the way the organizational function. The effect of management is noticeable in an organization where targets are met according to plans.
